A military member at a Colorado duty station doesn’t need ownership tax paid if they submit an affidavit stating that they are a non-residence of Colorado. Eligible military personnel can do a vehicle registration with the legal office or the state Department of Motor Vehicles, confirming that they are exempt. In order for this exemption to be granted by the state, servicemembers must provide documentation which verifies that they don’t legally reside in the state of Colorado.
To ensure lawful registration of vehicles belonging to those in military service, a non-resident affidavit is necessary for active duty service members. This can only be executed by the servicemember themselves or by a lawful agent that possesses an original general power of attorney.
These lawful agents will also be required to present a copy of their orders which specify a Colorado duty station. Moreover, each vehicle must have its own separate affidavit presented for it and must be updated on an annual basis – the affidavit itself holds validity for sixty days from the execution date.
Colorado is favorable to active duty military in terms of taxation. If ownership tax or other taxes are due on an earning statement, active duty military members qualify for tax exemptions for their time spent serving the country. The state of Colorado honors this commitment by allowing qualified soldiers not to have to pay property or ownership tax if it was earned during service.
Military personnel do not have to pay for vehicle registration in Colorado, as stated by the Senate Bill 19-054 Surplus Military Vehicle. This bill stipulates that these automobiles are only eligible for an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) title and cannot be used on public roadways.
By allowing this exemption, military service members can focus their resources on other aspects of their duty without having to worry about vehicle registration expenses. Furthermore, it ensures a small yet important acknowledgment of their sacrifice to the nation while providing potential cost relief.
